One Year Ago Today...

One year ago today, we found out that we were going to have a baby. It's amazing to me how much has happened in the last year, and how fast it went! I remember that day fairly well. I had suspicions that I may be pregnant, so I got up that morning before Craig left for work and took a test. I tried to keep telling myself to not get my hopes up. It was only our first month trying, and it's pretty rare for it to work out that quickly. It said not pregnant, so we went about our normal routine of going to work. I was disappointed and sad, but kept reminding myself that it was only the first time. I still had a feeling that something was up though that I couldn't shake!

So, I went home for lunch and took another test...this time it was positive! I was in shock! I pulled out the test from earlier that morning and saw that the control line wasn't there, so that test did work which explains the negative result! Here I am home alone with Izzy with the most exciting news of our lives and I can't tell anyone! I wanted to tell Craig in person, so I stifled my excitement as much as I could and went back to work. I avoided everyone at work as much as possible that day and didn't answer my cell phone because I was about ready to burst. I counted down the seconds to 5 o'clock so that I could get home and tell Craig. Of course in typically fashion, Craig said that he could tell and was not surprised at all! Whatever...he always ruins my surprises!

It was a Friday afternoon, so I couldn't call my OBs office until that next Monday, so we spent that weekend in a state of shock! We had planned it, wanted it, and suddenly it happened! We were so lucky! We couldn't believe it. We celebrated with a dinner out at Las Margaritas...may have been the start of my cravings!

We shared our news with our closest friends and family the week before Labor Day. I was about 7 weeks along and we had wanted to wait, but we had a trip planned with Ryan & Jill to Las Vegas over Labor Day and knew we couldn't go with them without telling them. We made a trip home the weekend before the trip to Vegas to tell our parents & my siblings. We had a lot of fun with it, and I think we caught most of them off guard! Izzy actually did the telling for us. We had a little shirt made for her that said she was going to be a big sister! It was fun! We told the rest of the world after our first doctor's appointment in early September. I was about 10 weeks along!

Oh what a difference a year makes, now we have a beautiful baby girl that we couldn't love any more! She is perfect and we are blessed! I can't wait to see what's next!

It's a girl!

Delaney Jo Mencke
March 19, 2010
12:05 PM
5 pounds 12 ounces
18 1/2 inches

Delaney made an early arrival yesterday after a long couple of days. Thursday, March 18th, started out like an ordinary day. Craig and I both went to work as usual, and we had a doctor's appointment scheduled for 3:15 Thursday afternoon. This appointment was to re-check my blood pressure and get the lab results of my 24 hour urine collection. We got to the appointment and started the usual routine: pee in a cup, step on the scale, listen to the heartbeat, measure the belly. Then, the doctor got to looking at the blood pressure readings and things began to change.

They decided to hook us up for another NST to check on baby and make sure baby was okay. We were all hooked up and chilling in the back room, while the doctors discussed what to do with me. Next thing we know, we are told that we will be sent over to Labor & Delivery at 5 p.m. Naturally, I freaked out a little bit and Craig got crazy excited. We walked into the office more prepared to be scheduled for an induction when we hit 37 weeks next Thursday or Friday, not right now! So, Craig made a few phone calls while I tried to compose myself. We headed over to L&D about 4:30p.m.

We got all checked in and I was hooked up to 2 IVs and a catheter by 6p.m. They placed the first Cytotec pill to start ripening my cervix. They inserted another one at around 10 p.m. I was also attached to a blood pressure cuff that automatically took my blood pressure reading every 15 minutes. So, between the hourly visits by the nurse and the 15 minutes intervals between arm strangulations by the cuff, I got maybe 30-45 minutes of sleep all night on Thursday. They decided I was having too many contractions with the Cytotec to have more doses of that, so at 2 a.m. they started the Pitocin. They started low and slowly upped the dosage gradually every 15-30 minutes. By 6 a.m., I was having decent contractions, but I was only dialated to about 1 1/2-2 centimeters. At 8, I was at only 2 centimeters, so my doctor decided to break my water to jump start things. All it did was start an hour long contraction with no rest periods. I contracted for that hour and was in more misery than I can ever remember. I was ready to throw in the towel. I had an epidural placed by 9 a.m., which helped a lot. I think my tube count was up to about 6 by this point. The epidural took away virtually any feeling of the contractions. I was having too many contractions and they were worried the baby would start suffering, so they slowed down the Pitocin and eventually stopped it just to give my body some rest periods. I continued to have contractions every minute or so until 11 a.m.

At about 11:20ish, Dr. Eisenhauer came into check my progress and discuss the options. I was still only 3 centimeters, after 3 hours on serious contractions and multiple other hours of ripening. 18hours and still virtually no progress. She said that she thought we were going to end up with a c-section. We had the option to continue down the road we were on for a while, but she was sure we'd end up with the same result. We decided not to wait for the inevitable. By 11:30 a.m., we were all being prepped for a c-section!

Miss Delaney Jo was born at 12:05 p.m. Considering how small she is and how early she is, she is perfect! So far, I think she has a lot of her daddy in her. She has big hands with really long fingers and really long feet! She also has a lot of curly hair and is fairly dark with some lighter sections! It's almost as if she has hi-lights! She also have gorgeous blue eyes, and her daddy's pouty lips! She is still super sleepy, but this is common in all newborns, especially early babies and smaller babies!

We are so far very fortunate to have her doing so well, and especially avoiding the NICU. Her lungs are good, which is a major concern with premature/early babies, so that is a huge relief! She is having a little trouble keeping her body temperatures up, so she did spend last night in the nursery under the warming lamps. She has maintained much better today! She is also well with the formula supplements, and we are both learning this breastfeeding business. Each time we get a little better!

We will post more pictures and stories later!

Welcome to the world Parker!

Our crazy clan of friends got its newest member last night. Parker Valdemar Aerni joined us! He weighed in at 8 pounds and was 21 inches long. Sounds like both baby and Mom are doing well! We are just on our way to visit...we can't wait any longer to meet this little boy! Congratulations to his wonderful parents! I see many play dates with Parker and our little one in the future...hopefully, Baby Reed will be able to join us too!

This means only one more baby in our immediate circle of family and friends before ours is born! Amie & Jeff are up next, due mid-March!

32 Weeks

We hit another milestone tomorrow at 32 weeks...8 months! Where has the time gone? It seems like it was just yesterday that it was a sauna out and we were adjusting to the fact that we were going to become parents. Crazy! My how time flies!

We are feeling pretty good these days! I'm having more and more swelling and back pain, but all of this is "normal" as per my doctor and to be expected. Craig says I'm huge on a regular basis, so I guess that means I'm also growing daily. He also says that I'm fidgety, and I say that's because I'm very rarely comfortable these days.

Daddy Craig is getting very impatient with the waiting game. We have a little under 2 months to go, and he's ready to meet this little one now! The nursery has become his "baby", so he spends a lot of time in there trying to make sure everything is just so! As you can see, it's coming together nicely! Izzy is also enjoying the nursery and getting used to all these baby things that are suddenly appearing in the house. I even found her napping in the nursery all by herself last week. It was very cute! I have a feeling she will be involved in all the nighttime feedings, and may even make that room part hers!

We met with a pediatrician tonight after work! She was really nice, and I am confident she will be good for us and the baby! Another big "check" off our list!

Nursery Progress

Well, I finally took pictures of our nursery progress thus far. We have made some serious strides in the last couple weeks. I'm loving how it is turning out. I cannot wait to see it when it's all finished, which won't be until after the baby is here as we have some gender and name specific elements planned.

So, let's start the tour...

Our super cool clock, so we know exactly what time those nighttime feedings are happening!

Our paper lantern mobile-ish decoration. I think the baby will be entertained by it from both the crib & the changing table. So far, these are my favorite part!

A glimpse of the changing table and the crib.

Our new Lay-Z-Boy recliner/rocker with our curtains and valance. Grandma Les made our valance for us out of some extra fabric that matches the bedding Kaitlyn & her mom are making for us.

A better picture of the crib & changing table.

So there it is in all it's green glory! Like I said I'm really loving it so far. Just a few finishing touches left! Craig has worked really hard with putting everything together and hanging everything up. He's been really patient with me throughout this process. I think he's done a great job!

We did a little photo shoot the other day with Izzy because we wanted a special picture of her to hang in the nursery. These were our favorites...

She looks more puppy like in this one...probably why I liked it so much!

Here she is getting ready to pounce!

And, this is her all cute and cuddly!

We had our latest check-up with the doctor today. Everything is still looking really good! I'm measuring right on schedule at 31 weeks and all of my labs are within my normal ranges. I'm also finally gaining a little weight, which is good since I hadn't much up until this point. Now, let's hope I don't balloon too much over the next 9ish weeks! Here's a picture from today, as you can see I'm definitely growing. The color got a little funky with this one...not sure why!

Baby Names

So, we are sort of struggling with the baby name project all of a sudden. Maybe struggling isn't the word, but we aren't really making progress either. We had narrowed it down to about 4 names for each (boy or girl), but now we seem to be adding a few more and not absolutely loving any of them. So, while we're in the last 3 month stretch, I thought we'd see what you thought. Leave us a comment and let us know your suggestions. Remember we need a girl name & a boy name. We will consider all suggestions! Thanks so much!

Oh, and a funny story from Saturday morning. Craig has this new habit of putting his ear to my belly to listen to the little monkey inside. He was doing just this on Saturday morning, and that little monkey got a little feisty and kicked him right in the side of the head. We had a good belly laugh! Now, daddy thinks we may have a soccer champ or NFL punter growing in there! We'll see!

We Survived!!!

We are back in Lincoln having survived all the holidays and the big wedding! It was all a lot of fun, but it does feel nice to be home and getting back to "normal" life. The Christmas blizzard wasn't much fun. Luckily, we made it up to Tekamah before it hit. This meant some extra quality time with my family which was great, but it also meant no Mencke/Wortman family Christmas which was sad. It was a good thing we were there too because Craig's truck was the only vehicle in the Bryant family that was able to get around town for a couple days. He even managed to get it stuck on Christmas in Tekamah, but they got it dug out pretty quick!

We didn't get to celebrate Christmas with all of our extended families like we had planned, but I'm very grateful for what we were able to do. It sounds like we were one of the few families that still had a Christmas dinner and celebration on Christmas. Many families in the area were snowed in without power. No fun!

After Christmas came and went, we geared up for Jess & Nick's wedding. Last week was a whirlwind of activities. It was a lot of fun to spend time with everyone for such an exciting occasion. Their wedding day was all but perfect! Jess looked absolutely gorgeous, and they still had a great turnout considering the crazy weather conditions. The only downside of the day was Jess's nervous stomach getting the best of her for most of the reception. All and all, it was still a great party, and everyone there had a blast! Craig was no exception. I heard from one family of party-goers that they rated him among the top 5 drunkest! If they would have seen him at 1:30 a.m. when we got to the hotel with Jess & Nick...I think he would have jumped up a few spots! Crazy!

After a day of rest and recovery on Friday, we made a trip to the Nebraska Furniture Mart with Craig's parents. We finally bought the king-size bed we've been thinking/dreaming about for months. It will be delivered this Saturday, and I cannot wait. We should have done this years ago! We also found a Lay-Z-Boy recliner for the nursery that I'm super excited about. Everything's starting to come together! I'm excited to see the room start to look more and more like a nursery.

January is shaping up to be another busy month, with lots of baby-related activities. We have meetings this week with a potential pediatrician and another potential daycare provider. Wish us luck...both are important decisions, that I would like to have made sooner rather than later. I also have my first baby shower this weekend with my best friend Amanda. She's down to 4 weeks, so keep her in your thoughts as she gets closer and closer to the end. Our next doctor's appointment is next week with the big glucose screening! Then, next weekend we have another family wedding...my cousin Joe and his fiance Erin are getting married up in Omaha. It should be another fun evening!

Merry Christmas!

I'm pretty sure the next 10 days or so are going to be crazy busy, I thought I would post now while I still had the time. We will be heading home sometime in the next few days (depending on this crazy weather situation), and I will remain there until after Jess & Nick's wedding next week. Craig will come back to Lincoln for a few days to work next week. I'm so looking forward to the time at home with family and friends, but I know by the time we are all back in Lincoln and everything is over I will be one exhausted pregnant lady.

While we're away we will hit a big milestone (to me) in the pregnancy. We will hit the 6 month mark. Seriously! Is it just me, or has time flown by?!? Baby M has been kicking more and more these days. So far it doesn't hurt or anything. It actually makes me feel better because at least to me it means Baby M is doing just fine in there. Craig is still trying to feel it, I think he has but he just doesn't know it yet. He needs a little more patience!

I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! I hope you all make it where you're going safe and sound! Also, Happy New Year as we are booked until mid-January! We have so much to be thankful for in 2009, and so far 2010 is shaping up to be the best year yet! We have so much to look forward to. I can't wait!

Love,

the Mencke's

23 Weeks!

Technically, we hit 23 weeks tomorrow, but I decided I'd post tonight. We had our monthly check-up today. Everything is still looking good! Baby's heartbeat was in the 140 range and I'm measuring right on target at 23. Next appointment, I have the dreaded glucose screening to check for gestational diabetes. I have a bottle of glucola chilling in my fridge for the next month. Let's hope I pass...I've heard horror stories about the 3 hour version! For all of you that don't see me regularly, I thought you might like a visual of the baby bump. It seems to get getting bigger and bigger every day!

You may notice the green walls behind me...yes, this is the nursery in progress! The painting is done! I really love the color. Here's a few more pictures:

As you can see, we have our crib. We have yet to put it together. It may not be assembled until after the holidays/wedding. That's all right, we have plenty of time! Speaking of the holidays and wedding, can you believe that Christmas is next week already and the wedding in 2. Yikes! It's going to be a crazy couple of weeks around here. I'm looking forward to it, it should be lots of fun!

Oh, and just for fun! Here's a picture of Izzy and I . She loves to be in the middle of things. She also is very interested in the new green room! I seriously think she knows something "BIG" is going on. I'm so excited to see her and her new sibling interact. It should be quite entertaining!

Well, now that you've all "seen" me, we can start taking bets on the gender of the little one. Any guesses? Leave us a comment if you feel up to the challenge!

The Latest

It's been a while since I've posted. I'm not really sure why, but all is good here! We are now 15 1/2 weeks along with the baby. We get more and more excited about everything each day! It's good that time is flying by. It also helps that there are plenty of things going on these days to keep us busy!

We have had 2 doctors appointments now. We heard the little one's heartbeat at both appointments. According to the doctor it was around 160-170 bpm. I'm still feeling really good. I'm starting to get a little energy back, and I have more of an appetite. My doctor says I have actually lost a few pounds. I think that's a little funny considering I haven't been sick thus far in the pregnancy, but I have definitely been eating less. Mostly, because nothing sounds good!

We did have a bit of a set back last week. I got the flu, or something just like it. I actually spent 3+ days in bed. I only got up to shower (every other day), go to the bathroom, or get something to drink. It was ridiculous. I never remember being sick like that before. I definitely think I had the flu of some kind. I did have the seasonal flu shot in early September, so I suppose it could have been the dreaded H1N1 as I haven't gotten that vaccine yet. Izzy took care of me those days while Craig was at work! She's a great snuggle buddy!

We have scheduled our next doctor's appointment for November 18th. We are really looking
forward to that one as we will get to see the little one that day on an ultrasound! We are still going to have a surprise as far as gender goes, and wait until he or she is born to find out. I'm still thinking it's a girl, but time will tell!

Jessica & Nick's wedding events kicked off today. We had the Hassler Family Pampered Chef Shower. It was nice to see the family! It was also nice since I was the PC rep, so I made a little something! Their next shower is back home in a few weeks! That one will be fun I'm sure! After that the holidays start with the bachelor & bachelorette parties thrown in the middle for fun! I'm really looking forward to the wedding!

Our family is growing...

Yes! That's right, the Mencke family is getting a new addition this spring! We are expecting our first little one around April 15th! We are so excited and feel truly blessed!

We are 10 weeks along, and so far so good! Craig says I'm crabby (and I know I am sometimes), but that's all part of it! So far, my chief complaints are that I am SOOOOO tired all the time and I have been having migraines again! I had mono in high school, and this is about 100 times worse. It doesn't matter if I sleep for 12 hours at night, I am still a zombie by mid-afternoon! I have also had more migraines again. Luckily the really bad ones have hit on the weekends, but I have some sort of a headache every couple days. My doctor says that this should get better in a few weeks...we are crossing our fingers! I feel a little queasy once in a while...typically in the evenings, but so far the "morning" sickness hasn't been too bad!

We went to our first doctor's appointment on Monday this week, and that was pretty cool! After all the poking & prodding, we got to hear the baby's heartbeat! It was very cool! It made it all a little more "real" for us! My doctor was pleased with everything, and we will go back in 4 weeks!

Both of our families have been great! Everyone is so supportive & excited! I'm getting the most amusement thus far out of my siblings, who have been dying with this secret for 3 weeks! Our family isn't good with lying or secrets, so this has been tough on them! One of the many things I'm looking forward to is to see how everybody interacts with this baby! It should be quite entertaining!

I think Izzy knows too! Some say dogs can sense it, and I totally agree! She has been very cuddly and sweet with me. I can't wait to see what she does with the little one! I'm sure she will be the baby's protector, and absolutely adore her new sibling! Izzy was our way of telling our immediate family & friends! We ordered a doggie t-shirt for her online that said "I'm not supposed to say anything, but...Mommy's having a baby!" It's pretty cute, and whenever we put it on her it's almost like she knows she's wearing big news! She gets all crazy & excited!

So enough rambling for now, but check back often because we have lots to share these days!

Oh, and we won't be fining out the gender, so name suggestions (both ways) will be appreciated & considered!

Oh again, my two best girlfriends are also expecting their first babies (both in February), and I couldn't be more excited to share this crazy experience with them! I know I will appreciate them more and more the further into this I get!
